2006 CHINESE CANADIAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Eligibility

  1. 13 to 25 years old
  2. A Chinese resident of Canada
  3. Nominated by TWO (2) adults above the age of 25

Award Overview and History

At the Chinese Canadian Youth Achievement Awards, Chinese Canadian youths gather to highlight and recognize their peers who have excelled in their different talents and contributions to the community. The Chinese Canadian Youth Achievement Awards are given out to 12 individuals who have displayed outstanding achievement s in their respective fields. Nominations for awards were open to all individuals and each applicant's work was thoroughly reviewed by a panel represented by all aspects of the Chinese Canadian community. Awards were separated into four categories, and three awards were given out per category. The categories are :

  • Performance Arts
  • Visual Arts
  • Athletics
  • Leadership and Community Service

Winners of each category will be awarded with scholarship of:

Gold Award : $350
Silver Award: $200
Bronze Award: $100

A final award, The Youth of The Year Award, is charged with recognizing an individual (s) who has demonstrated outstanding qualities as a Chinese Canadian youth. In 2005, the Youth of The Year Award was given to Mr. Eddie Hui and Mr. Tony Wong, who have set out a long journey walking from St. John's to Toronto in an effort to raise funds for the improvement of quality and delivery of basic education in the underserved regions of People's Republic of China . This fund-raising project is also known as ¡§As I walk, You Learn¡¨ .

Application

Applicants are asked to enter into only ONE (1) of the four available areas: Visual Arts, Performance Arts, Athletics, Leadership and Community Service and complete the following:

  1. A cover letter explaining their interest in the relevant field and providing reasons why the applicant is deserving of the award (Maximum ONE (1) page)

  2. An up to date Curriculum Vitae outlining the achievements and activities of the candidate. (Maximum THREE (3) pages)

  3. A portfolio of work from Visual Arts Applicants. While we encourage applicants to submit their original work, slides or photographs of their work will also be accepted.

  4. A video or audio recording from Performance Arts Applicants. The Chinese Cultural Centre will NOT be hosting live auditions. Media format requirements:

    • For videos: PC format (wmv, avi, mpg, Quicktime, swf), DVD , videotape, or personal offline website on media

    • For audios: Cassette tape, CD

    In an event that the medium cannot be viewed and/or heard, you will be notified immediately and must provide a new version to CCCYC before the application deadline. Any entries received after the deadline will NOT be considered.

  5. A minimum of ONE(1) letter of reference from one of the two nominators outlining their relationship to the applicant, the applicant's achievements, and list specific qualities or accomplishments otherwise not mentioned in the package above.

  6. Submission of copies of the applicant's previous recognition in their field, certificates of distinctions, and other letters of reference are encouraged but it is not a requirement

Please Submit your application by mail or personally to The Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto with the applicants' portfolio.

The Chinese Cultural Centre will, to the best of its abilities, preserve the qualities of original artworks submitted and promptly return the submitted works upon the end of adjudication. Winners of the Performance Arts field are asked to perform in the Awards Banquet. Winners of the Visual Arts field are asked to display their work for the duration of the evening.

For those applicants that pass the first round of screening, an interview may be extended to them with the Judging Panel. Interviews will be conducted in October, 2006.

Awards

Submission Deadline:
September 22, 2006, 5:00pm. Packages MUST be received by this date and time to be eligible.

Each winner will be awarded a trophy and a scholarship.
The decisions of the judges are final.
